Notes to help introduce singing together to 'new' agencies
What we do:
- training and ongoing counseling for singing leaders & groups
- assisting groups/agencies to develop regular opportunities for singing with others
Group singing, not singing groups?
In the singing circle, the process IS the product
People congregating to sing together in the here and now (primary value of the activity is in the making - not the presenting)
Locally led, owned and initiated
Why
No better way of people enjoying being with others (which is the essential basis for community, connectedness, wellbeing)
Confidence building (it's both the effect of singing, and describes what we do)
How
- Not entering in without an invitation
- Investigation and audit (being careful not to step on toes; not to compete with current activities; not to duplicate effort, not to reinvent the wheel)
- Co-operating with workers and activists in the location
- Identifying interested persons (potential participants and potential leaders)
- Meeting with them to discuss their wishes and outlining how we can help their achievement
- Sometimes doing a couple of demonstrations of the process
- Arranging for leadership group to observe other leaders at work &/or other forms of skill development
- Sometimes leading the first couple of sessions
- Sometimes observing the new leaders work and offering positive advice
- Being available for ongoing conversation/discussion/advice
- Helping leadership group to connect with the leaders network
What do we want?
Depends who's asking
Often, nothing; if something, then
- The opportunity to show what we can do
- Fee for demonstration
- Subsidised attendance of agency's staff and clients at our training days
