'Victoria Sings', the VicHealth sponsored program run by Community Music Victoria, is designed to weave community singing back into the cultural fabric of Victoria.
Through this program, individuals and groups are helped to find opportunities to sing together, to start their own singing circles, or to make the one they're in more enjoyable. All sorts of advice and resources are there for those wanting to add some harmony to their lives. You can even get someone to come to your next meeting to explain the program and lead participants, right there and then, through the liberating and joyful experience of making beautiful sounds together (satisfaction guaranteed).
The program is based on the belief that, with encouragement and support, everyone can enjoy singing and that the experience of singing with others is even more enjoyable.
But this isn't a program that's just about fun. It's also about improving health and building community. There are libraries full of scientific research that show the health benefits, and the community development potential is as plain as day to anyone who has experienced a well-led group singing event. Community can't happen without people getting together - finding the magnet is always a challenge (especially one that is welcoming and inclusive), and the fact is there's nothing more attractive than the joy that comes through singing together.
But what about all of us who are too scared to open our mouths, you ask. And there lies the secret of the 'Victoria Sings' program. Ways have been discovered to overcome embarrassment, fear, doubt and even tunelessness. Don't believe it? Call us and we'll arrange a demonstration.
